Join us for a fantastical evening of storytelling, poetry and monsters of all kinds at the Cultch! On April 28th, pass through the doors of the Cultch and enter into a world of monsters, some spooky, some shy and some that you may have met along your travels. Word will be a night in which to frolic amongst your fears as well as revel in the wealth of wonderfully wordy talent onstage, which will include the finals of Hullabaloo, the BC Secondary Poetry Slam Championship! Don’t forget to dress up; draw inspiration from the monsters of Hollywood, mythology, society and your own backyard and get into character!
For two years now the IGNITE! Word Committee has presented an exciting showcase for all things literary, legible and linguistic, and the launch of the IGNITE! Youth Anthology! Last year Word featured spoken word artists, excerpts from the Anthology, films (including one inspired by a beloved childhood favorite, The Paper Bag Princess), the words of the Candelabra Collective, and the Kidnap Kids! This year is going to be even better, with an exciting line-up of proficiently verbose young performers in the first half and the finals of Hullabaloo, the BC Secondary School Poetry Slam Championship in the second. You will not want to miss this incredible event—they’ll be telling the story for years to come!

Mock Turtle SocietyThe Mock Turtle Society was founded in 1963, when a swarm of giant mutant Arctic Albino Bumblebees emerged from the frozen radioactive wastes of the North Pole. Their painful stings invoked odd visions and delirium. The mad ravings of the few survivors were taken down in a ancient tome. Thus, the Mock Turtle Society was founded, to herald the coming of the Beepocalypse. No one knows how many of the order linger, or how many of their stories remain to be told. |

Internet FuturesShawn and Oliver are an exciting pair of modern day business tycoons, made famous by their Internet 3.0 web-store and self-aware pyramid scheme “Internet Futures”. Shawn and Oliver are from Kingston and Winnipeg originally, and if pressed would define themselves as a “couple of out-of-towners”. If you don’t want to buy at least one Internet Future by the end of their presentation, you were not paying attention. |
