Young Playwrights Festival 2012

The 2012 Young Playwrights Festival premieres three original one-act plays, written, directed, and performed entirely by youth. The three shows are running in repertory in the VanCity Culture Lab throughout The 2012 IGNITE! Youth-Driven Arts Festival, May 14th-19th.

The Romantics

Written by Andrew Wade
Directed by Mika Laulainen

A naive self-tracker prepares for love at first sight, as a neurotic, a nostalgic, and a lost soul launch into a love triangle. An ex-wife confronts her depression while her ex-husband deals with his guilty conscience for having left her. A relationships comedy (yes, comedy) akin to Love Actually, The Romantics is a character-focused play that theatrically explores how these people grapple with relationships and love.

Making Light

Written by Josephine Mitchell
Directed by Kaylin Metchie
Assistant Directed by Dakota Shelby

Johnny, a lost 20 year old, has forgotten how to light a campfire and Stella, a veteran sex worker, has never lit anything but a cigarette, but they’re camping in the approaching dark and between the two of them some sort of fire needs to light. Both in the middle of the woods for different reasons, Johnny and Stella reveal how their worlds overlap into intimate territory. Territory where neither assumed they’d end up.

The Education of Jamie Stewart

Written by Lyndsey Bourne
Directed by Jenni Raine

Henry Bartlett is a bitter and cantankerous professor, longing to see passion in the eyes of his students. In walks Jamie, a naïve and determined nineteen-year-old who questions Henry’s theories on teaching, literature and humanism. As their relationship progresses the line between mentor and student is blurred. Tensions rise as Henry’s influence over Jamie becomes that of an obsessive father, struggling to maintain relevance in the face of a new generation.
